Bowlero Looks to Develop a Bowling Alley at the Former Dick's Sporting Goods in Moorpark (OPENED ON 12/8/23)

UPDATE: Lucky Strike Moorpark opened on December 8, 2023.

The City of Moorpark received an application for a Conditional Use Permit from Bowlero in July to develop a bowling alley at the former Dick's Sporting Goods, 706 Los Angeles Avenue (near the Amazon Fresh store). The application is currently undergoing review by the city and its planning commission.

If approved, the project would still need to go through environmental analysis, a public hearing and final approval. Bowlero is the largest bowling alley operator in the world, with 300 centers, including local locations at The Collection at Riverpark in Oxnard and in Woodland Hills.

When Will the Amazon Fresh Stores Open in Westlake Village and Moorpark?

UPDATE: Westlake Village / Thousand Oaks location to open on August 4, 2022.

Our friend Amelia S was the first to notice the sign on the former Vintage Grocers / Bristol Farms at The Promenade at Westlake on October 10, 2020 that Amazon Retail LLC had applied to transfer a liquor license to the entity, which led us to discover that an Amazon Fresh store would be occupying this spot in the future.

It is now mid-December 2021, one week before Christmas, 12 months later, and the store is still not open.

There are Amazon Fresh signs prominently displayed, so we suspect it will be happening at some point, perhaps in 2022.

Amazon Fresh is also opening a store at The Village at Moorpark, 742 New Los Angeles Avenue in what was previously a Staples. (UPDATE: THE MOORPARK STORE OPENED IN FEBRUARY 2022.)

They are currently hiring store associates and other positions for the Moorpark store starting at $15.85 per hour plus up to a $3,000 signing bonus. So it does sound like the Moorpark store is closer to opening than the Westlake Village store.

The Amazon Fresh signs have been up for awhile at the Moorpark location.

El Taco Chico Opened 2nd Location in Moorpark on December 19th

Pretty impressive! El Taco Chico, which opened its first location early this spring at 640 Lindero Canyon Road in Oak Park, announced it just opened a 2nd location at 888 New Los Angeles Avenue, Suite D in Moorpark. To open up not one, but TWO locations during the challenging times of this pandemic is impressive!

Classes at Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura Colleges to Remain Remote in Spring 2021

Ventura County Community College District announces that due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19, a majority of its classes at Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura colleges will continue to be remote for the spring 2021 semester, which begins Jan. 11. Strict protocols will still be in place for students and faculty who must be on campus for courses that cannot be remote.

In making the decision, VCCCD leadership carefully explored the issue and prioritized the health and safety of its approximately 31,000 students and 1,700 employees during the pandemic. The District will continue to monitor pandemic conditions and state and local Department of Public Health guidelines and restrictions and make adjustments to work status and access to the colleges as appropriate.

“We are alerting students, employees and the community of our actions now to enable everyone to plan for the future,” said Chancellor Greg Gillespie. “Our faculty at all the colleges has worked hard to adapt the curriculum for online learning so that students have an excellent learning experience.”

Continuing student registration appointment times for the spring 2021 semester will be listed on students’ MyVCCCD email portal beginning Sept. 28, 2020. New student registration begins Nov. 16. Students may register for classes at more than one VCCCD college.

“We appreciate the ongoing support of the community as we continue to take steps to protect the safety and health of our students and employees while providing educational instruction and student support,” said Board Chair Bernardo M. Perez. “We are committed to helping our students fulfill their educational and career goals.”

"Watch for Wild Animals" Signs on State Route 23 Between Thousand Oaks, Moorpark

WildAnimals23 - Copy.jpg

You may have noticed these Caltrans "Watch for Wild Animals" signs placed in the north/southbound directions of the State Route 23 between Thousand Oaks and Moorpark. According to Caltrans District 7, the signs were placed as part of a mitigation plan after a road-kill study done prior to widening of the highway.

Caltrans counted 222 road-kill in a three year study and decided to do something about it, including setting up 12 one-way wildlife gates, cleaning out culverts to allow for animals to cross underneath the highway, increasing the height of fencing to prevent animals from hopping over, and placing these signs to alert motorists.
