Photos of the Pepperdine University 9/11 Waves of Flags Display From Scott Harrison

For the sixth year in a row, Pepperdine University has staged a dramatic display of flags on its expansive lawn at Alumni Park, Malibu, to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Each flag, reflecting each victim's nationality, represents each of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that tragic day.

Since that time, the display has come to be a focal point in the Malibu community to gather in remembrance and meditation of the innocent lives lost on 9/11, including Tom Burnett, alumnus of the Graziadio School of Business and Management.

Burnett's heroism as a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93 has been well documented. As a result of the passengers' attempt to take control of the hijacked airliner and divert it from reaching the terrorists' target, United 93 crashed in a field in Pennsylvania rather than striking a building or landmark in the nation's capital, causing more loss of human life.

As it has annually since September 2001, the Office of the Chaplain, the Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Office of the President will host a brief memorial service at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Heroes Garden, a 14,880-square-foot outdoor sanctuary that overlooks the Pacific Ocean on one of the highest bluffs on the Malibu campus. The garden serves as a public space to pause, reflect, and honor those who sacrificed their lives on 9/11, including Burnett.

Pepperdine University's Annual Waves of Flags Display in Honor of 9/11 Victims

Once again this year (2013), Pepperdine University students and other volunteers staged a display of nearly 3,000 flags in honor of each of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The display was at Alumni Park, at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road. Each victim is memorialized with a flag reflecting their nationality.

Whether you visit at night or during the day, this tremendous display is a sobering reminder of one of our country's darkest days.

Pepperdine’s Annual Waves of Flags Display Honors 9/11 Victims

To honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Pepperdine will once again stage a display of flags on its expansive lawn at Alumni Park, Malibu—with one flag, of the victim’s nationality, for each of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that tragic day. 

The installation of the flags, which will be on display until Founder's Day and the close of Pepperdine's 75th anniversary celebrations on September 19, was conceived and led by the University's chapter of the College Republicans in 2008.

Since that time, the display has come to be a focal point in the Malibu community to gather in remembrance and meditation of the innocent lives lost on 9/11, including Tom Burnett, alumnus of the Graziadio School of Business and Management.

As it has annually since September 2001, the University will conduct a brief prayer service on September 11 at the Heroes Garden, a 14,880-square-foot outdoor sanctuary that overlooks the Pacific Ocean on one of the highest bluffs on the Malibu campus. This year's service will begin at 8:30 a.m., led by University Chaplain, Dave Lemley. The garden serves as a public space to pause, reflect, and honor those who sacrificed their lives on 9/11, including Burnett.

10th Anniversary of 9/11 Remembrance Events Around Ventura County

There are a number of special events planned around Ventura County in remembrance of those who perished in the terrorist attacts on 9/11/01 10 years ago. They are summarized below.

You cannot miss the annual display of 2,977 flags at Pepperdine University in honor of those who died in the attacks starting September 9th through the 19th. This is a touching tribute that you have to experience in person. You may also sirens and horns at this venue by local fire/emergency crews in support of the heroes of 9/11. You can't help but get emotional during this tribute.

For the 10th anniversary, Pepperdine hosted other events on 9/11, including a reading of the 2,977 victims' names from 11am-3pm, film screening of United 93 at 1pm and remembrance ceremony at 4pm.

The 4th Annual Ride to the Flags event started at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in the morning and culminated in over 700 motorcycles riding to Pepperdine via Oxnard/Hidden Valley on 9/11.

Fire stations in Oxnard participated in the National Moment of Remembrance at 10am across the city.

10th Anniversary of 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the Ventura Government Center at 11am will featured a ceremony, helicopter fly-over, bagpipes and musical tributes.

10th Anniversary of 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Constitution Park in Camarillo started at 4pm with tributes, flag ceremony, moment of silence and patriotic music.

The 6th Annual Simi Valley Freedom Walk started at 4:30pm at Reagan Library and ended at Rancho Madera Community Park. Featured ceremony, fly-over, musical performances and 1.8 mile walk.

The life of Chad Keller, a Santa Barbara resident killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was honored, along with a benefit performance of "I Was Greta Garbo" at the Lobero Theater in Santa Barbara.
